Join us on Saturday August 26th at our farm in Sunol for lunch, a farm tour, a breeding presentation and a tasting of our unique tomato varieties.
This event runs from 9AM until 4PM and guests are welcome to come and go throughout the day.
Limit = 20 guests for this interactive event.
Schedule: 9AM - Noon Tomato-breeding focused farm tour; Noon - 2PM Lunch and tomato tasting; 2PM - 3:30PM General Farm Tour; 3:30PM Tea and take-home produce distribution. All attendees will be encouraged to take home flats of tomatoes as well as other assorted seeds, plants and in-season produce and herbs from the farm. The value of the mix and match take-home items = $75/person
During the 9AM-Noon Farm tour you will see how we hand-cross tomatoes for our breeding work, and you will also see how we use our fields to test, select and refine the new tomato varieties we are developing. We will also discuss how to harvest and clean tomato seed and how we trellis our tomato rows.
Our fields will be full of ripe tomatoes on August 26th so we will have a wide variety of our tomatoes available during the lunch/tomato-tasting!
This day will be led by Fred Hempel, the primary farmer/breeder at Baia Nicchia Farm/Artisan Seeds. Fred is the breeder of the "Artisan" cherry tomatoes. He has a PhD. in Plant Biology from UC Berkeley. Read more about his breeding work here.
Additional information will be sent 2 weeks prior to this event.
