9AM - 10AM Farm Tour and trellising demonstration
10AM - 12:30PM Tomato Breeding demonstration and discussion (includes tomato crossing demonstration
1:30 - 2PM Informal discussion and opportunity to take home produce and/or plants
During this workshop you will see how we hand-cross tomatoes for our breeding work, and you will also see how we use our fields to test, select and refine the new tomato varieties we are developing. We will also discuss how to harvest and clean tomato seed and how we trellis our tomato rows.
This day will be led by Fred Hempel, the primary farmer/breeder at Baia Nicchia Farm/Artisan Seeds. Fred is the breeder of the "Artisan" cherry tomatoes. He has a PhD. in Plant Biology from UC Berkeley. Read more about his breeding work here.
